Kardinia Rotary Club has been pleased to assist the Northern Bay College and community by supporting activities in their Family Centre, in their Primary School and and Secondary School over many years. Our support ranges building and maintaining vegetable gardens; funding clothing, books and toys for families in need; funding a Story Dog for Grade 2 students to read to; funding awards to students; and promoting peace through providing peace poles and running an International Day of Peace function.
Northern Bay College is located in the northern suburbs of Geelong and comprises four separate P-8 Primary School campuses, and a single year 9-12 Secondary School campus.
Within the Secondary School precinct there is:
- a Family Centre/Community Hub providing family support, childminding and Kindergarten facilities to families; and
- the Geelong Industry Trade Training Centre that provides quality training to secondary school students in the automotive, building and construction, engineering and hospitality vocations.
The Kardinia Rotary Club has worked with the Northern Bay College over many years to support the students and community in a variety of ways.
We support the Family Centre by:
- Building raised garden bed and planter boxes and planting them with lots of vegies
- Holding regular working bees to maintain the raised garden beds and surrounding landscaping and grounds
- Holding on-site Club meetings at least annually
- Providing clothing, books and toys for families in need
- Establishing and providing ongoing donations to an Emergency Fund to assist children of families in need
- Purchasing polar tops for Kindergarten children
- Funding a cubby house that was constructed and installed by students from the Geelong Industry Trade Training Centre
- Providing graduation packs for children at the end of their Kindergarten years.
- Provide barbeques for families at year end and other celebrations.
Our support for the Primary School has included
- Jointly funding (with the Corio Bay Rotary Club) a Rotary Peace Pole at each of the four Primary School campuses
- Arranging an International Day of Peace celebration at each of the four Peace Poles.
- Ongoing funding for a Story dog (ie a dog that children read to for practice and confidence)
We also support the Secondary School through:
- Ongoing funding and presentation of awards to recognise student leaders
- Ongoing funding and presentation of numerous academic awards
- Our Annual site visits where we meet key and student leaders, catered for by hospitality students from the Geelong Industry Trade Training Centre
- Two of our Rotary Club members are members of the Northern Bay College Challenge Committee, established to support the College by seeking out financial support and fostering community partnerships to enable students to realise their potential.
